3rd International Drawing Contest for children 4-12 years old, celebrating the International Day of Light by UNESCO

The International Day of Light is a global initiative that provides an annual focal point for the continued appreciation of light and the role it plays in science, culture and art, education, and sustainable development, and in fields as diverse as medicine, communications, and energy. The broad theme of light will allow many different sectors of society worldwide to participate in activities that demonstrates how science, technology, art and culture can help achieve the goals of UNESCO – education, equality, and peace. “Penny’s Light Seminar“ by Dr. Penny Hatziefstratiou Michelinaki, organises the third international Drawing Contest on the topic of light & lighting. This is an effort to make children realise the importance and use of light in our life. It is a celebration for the International Day of Light by UNESCO (16 May).

Topic

The topic is “Light as an energy source“.

Light is a renewable source of energy, which is replenished naturally. Nowadays, it plays an important role in meeting our needs, due to the global energy crisis and climate changes. Children are asked to draw light as a source of energy. For example, they can capture the uses of sunlight as a source of energy (heating, cooling, lighting, production of electricity etc). Alternatively, they can show the opportunities that light can offer as a source of energy (education, equality, peace etc), thus expressing the vision of UNESCO.

Step 1 – Drawing

Think about the importance and the role of light as an energy source. Make a drawing on a white A4 paper (landscape). Each drawing must be the result of individual work. Children can use any drawing material they like (such a pencils or markers). They can also use collage, as long as this is integrated in the drawing, being a part of it, and not an independent piece of art.

Step 2 – Photo

Take a photo of your child’s drawing. Make sure it is well lit, without dark points or shadows. You must only include the drawing in the photo with no surroundings. Save as the photo with the child’s surname- name and year of birth.

Step 3 – Upload your photo

Send the photo together with the requested information through the submission form that you can find here. Submissions are allowed between January 2023 and May 1, 2023.

Live stream, online seminars

Children can participate in a live stream / online seminar in order to learn more about light & lighting. To arrange the seminar please send an email at pennyslightseminar@gmail.com

Award

A committee will decide on the best drawings. The winner will be contacted by email in order to receive as gift a copy of the book “Lucian’s first dream. A journey to light” by Dr Penny Hatziefstratiou Michelinaki, illustrated by Myrto Delivoria, offered by “Penny’s light seminar”. The book was approved in January 2022 by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport, Youth of Cyprus for the libraries of Primary Schools.

All participants can receive electronically an award of participation. Parents/ teachers should print this on A4 paper and complete the names of participants.

Book Summary

Lucian wondered what it’s like to have a dream. When he decides to look for his own dream, he sets out on a journey full of adventure! On this journey, Lucian discovers truths full of light, which in the end will help him find the way to his own dream…

Exhibition

The drawings that will receive an award will be presented in an online exhibition that will take place around May 16th, 2023.

By submitting the drawing of your child, you automatically accept the terms & conditions in this competition. You consent to the use of your personal data and that of your child, for the purposes of this competition. Personal data will not be forwarded or used by third parties, except “Penny’s light seminar”, organising the Contest. You also consent to the presentation of your child’s drawing in websites, social media, newsletters for the purposes of this event and through the online exhibition. A committee will decide on the winner. The decision cannot be doubted or not accepted. The winner will receive Penny’s book as an award without any further expectations, whatsoever. Every child is allowed to submit one drawing only, as a photo (.png, .jpg) max 2MB. Drawings must be individual, and not collective work.
